Pod2g Posts Poll To Determine Demand for Jailbreak

Famous jailbreaker pod2g, who has been the most vocal about his progress with the iOS 5.1 jailbreak, has posted an update to his blog in which he asks for the community’s opinion regarding the release of the iOS 5.1 jailbreak. The options (shown above) are to release the jailbreak now, and sacrifice possible exploits for iOS 6, or to save the current exploits and have an easy-made jailbreak once iOS 6 is finally released. Not that if you vote to have the jailbreak now, it could possibly be a long time to wait for an iOS 6 jailbreak after its release. You can vote at the top of the page here. So far, close to 60,000 votes have been cast, with the “Release Now” option sitting at 55% and the “Save the Exploits” at 41%. If you have a strong preference either way, be sure to cast your votes sometime in the next week, as that is when the poll will end.

As much as i have been waiting for the 5-1 JB, i have 5.-0-1 on my iphone4, and i can restore it and downgrade from 5-0 to 5-0-1. And the features for 5-1 arent that special. I say wait, now if i had a new device coming with 5-1 then id say release it. Just my .02 $

  @itzmyne That is how most people think when it comes to this question. Very simple: Do I have it right now or not. The simplest way to look at it if only taking yourself in to consideration. One thing this poll has showed me is how many people are on 5.1.

    @meiguorenzaizhongguo and thats the real question, not whether it should be released. but which is more, people with 5-1 on new devices are higher then others running 5-0-1. it seems the devices running with A5 were easier to JB then the others. so i would think 1 exploit to please tons of people would be worth it. But seeing as i dont have 4S yet, it doesnt really matter to me. But it would save me time being able to upgrade and JB, instead of restore, then spend the time to downgrade it and change settings etc then finally get it to 5-0-1 and then JB. so im on the fence about it. I do like new JBs it gives me something to do and play with for a while ha

      @itzmyne If you’re planning on getting a 4s, you better get one before 6.0 is released. If not you would have wished pod2g saved the JB.

      @meiguorenzaizhongguo I’ll get it, but I know it’ll get a JB by the time I get it. And that’s if he releases it. It coulda been done a while ago, but with the new iPad that was everyone’s concern. Coulda been the same with the other devices. I’ll get rh 4S and add it to all the other phones I have. And it’ll be JB also. Not a problem

We could wait for 5 months and get a JB for iOS 6 but Apple will just roll out 6.1 a week later. I might be wrong but aren’t all divices shipped with 5.1 now? Releasing the JB now is just as good.

  @Slave41 Devices are shipped with 5.1 right now and most of the things I have read say ios 6 could be out as early as June, but Apple could push it back just as a tactic to force the 5.1 JB release. Best case scenario would be Apple releasing in June and pod2g being able to use the exploits he has to JB 5.1 and 6.0, and people would be able to pick the ios version that they like the best. Typically, if the ios number in front of the decimal point changes, it means the ios has so many new changes/upgrades that it is no longer in the previous ios category. 6.1 would not be a huge improvement over 6.0, just like 5.1 wasn’t over 5.0.1. However, 6.0 should be a great leap over 5.1. If the 5.1 is JB is released now, people buying devices once the 6.0 is released will be in the same situation as all the people with 5.1 now. I guess I was just hoping people would realize that pod2g could kill 2 birds with one stone.

Releasing a 5.1 jailbreak would be a complete waste of the exploit. 5.1 came with very minor features and can hardly even be seen as an update. I say wait until the 6.0 release. It takes so long to find new exploits, wouldn’t we all rather have one available to us when a REAL update comes out? I think I speak for most when I say I’d like a jailbreak for 6.0 as soon as it comes out. Especially considering an update from 5.0.1 to 5.1 really only gives the feature of the camera grabber on the lockscreen, which you can enable on 5.0.1 devices with a simple tweak available on the Cydia store.

let me start this out by saying i’m not trying to step on anyone’s toes in this debate, i’m not directly going to say there is a right and wrong while trying to defend myself. I’m not extensively educated with the in-depth creation of a jailbreak. I just have a few questions that I was curious about. When we talk about all of the hard time and work and effort pod2g put into this JB and exploits, is it not possible for Apple programmers (who work day in and day out for $$$ to do exactly what other exploiters do for practically free) to locate this exploits to repair regardless of a jailbreak release? Or is Apple so self-absorbed that they sit back and wait for the exploits become public? But if that’s true, wouldn’t the same exploits be evident from the last IOS? again, no push and shove on this, I’m just curious

  @JoshPados Not a bad question at all. That is exactly the point. Apple has workers that do look fir these exploits. However, the number of exploits that have been found this time is very lucky. I mean 7 exploits is amazing. These are exploits that Apple failed to find before releasing the update. If the JB is released now, Apple will know exactly which exploits were used and definitely patch them. There is a chance that Apple will find them all on their own but a very small chance. The chances of letting one slip is greatly increased if the JB isn’t released. It is more about understanding statistics and probability more than understanding jailbreaking. The hardest part about jailbreaking isn’t really finding exploits, it is finding exploits that will lead to a JB that can be released to the public. Many hackers knew exploits that lead to jailbroken iPad 3′s the day it was released but that was because they have developer accounts. These JB’s are not suitable for public release. Close to 2 months later the first public 5.1 JB has yet to be released. The wait for the ios 6.0 JB will make 2 months seem like nothing if it takes a while to find new exploits.

Yet again, you haven’t proved to be a bright person. If Apple workers didn’t look for exploits then they would never be patched… Just another example showing that common sense is NOT so common. I think the only thing I am shitting on is your ego. I look forward to your next well thought out reply. Hahaha!

I came to my opinion through research and thought. I made a bias free decision and I stick to it. Unless I hear some well thought-out reasons why ios 5 should be released, my mind is not going to change. You ask me to respect your opinion, yet you do not respect mine. You had the balls to attack me when I answered a question with friendly intent to inform another person about information I found while researching. Don’t be hypercritical!
